Where to Stay in Barcelona: Best Areas and Hotels

Barcelona is compact, and the metro is easy, so no central neighborhood is a bad choice. The real trade-off is between old-town atmosphere and noise, Eixample calm and grand avenues, or the beach and a longer ride to the sights.

The Short Answer

For a first visit, stay in the old town: the Gothic Quarter or El Born. You can walk to the Cathedral, the Picasso Museum, La Rambla and the Boqueria market, and Barceloneta beach is about 20 minutes away on foot. Our pick is H10 Madison, a few meters from the Cathedral. The catch is crowds, narrow lanes and noise late at night.

  • Want calmer nights and wide streets: the Eixample, around Passeig de Gràcia, Casa Batlló and La Pedrera. It has the city's biggest choice of hotels and is a short walk from the old town.
  • Want to be first in line at Gaudí's basilica: stay near Sagrada Família, which is cheaper but 35–40 minutes' walk from the old town.
  • Want a neighborhood feel: Gràcia, with small squares, local bars and Park Güell up the hill.
  • Want the beach: Barceloneta for sand next to the old town, or Poblenou for quieter beaches farther out.
  • Want nightlife or a low budget: El Raval or Poble Sec.

If your trip hinges on a train, a ship or a flight, see our guides to hotels near Sants station, near the cruise port and near the airport.

Getting from the Airport to Your Hotel

  • Aerobús: express buses from Terminal 1 (A1) and Terminal 2 (A2) to Plaça de Catalunya, stopping at Plaça d'Espanya, Gran Via and Plaça Universitat. The trip takes about 35 minutes. A1 buses leave about every 8 minutes, A2 about every 15. This is the easiest choice for the old town and the Eixample.
  • Metro L9 Sud: trains leave both terminals about every 7 minutes, and TMB puts the ride to the city at about 32 minutes, but you will change lines at Torrassa (L1), Collblanc (L5) or Zona Universitària (L3). Single tickets and the T-casual are not valid to or from the airport: buy the Airport ticket or use the Hola Barcelona travel card.
  • Train (R2 Nord): from Terminal 2 only, about every 30 minutes from 5:40 am to 11:40 pm. It takes about 20 minutes to Sants and continues to Passeig de Gràcia. From Terminal 1, take the free 24-hour shuttle bus to T2 (about 10 minutes).
  • Taxi: 20–35 minutes to the center, depending on traffic. Only the black-and-yellow cabs at the official ranks are licensed taxis.

The Tourist Tax and Tickets to Book Ahead

Barcelona charges a tourist tax per person, per night, on top of the room price. It has two parts, the Catalan regional tax and a Barcelona city surcharge. For stays from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, the combined amounts are:

Where you stayPer person, per night (2026–27)
Five-star and grand luxury hotels€12.00
Four-star hotels€8.40
Tourist apartments€9.50
Most other hotels and guesthouses€7.00
Youth hostels€6.00

Under-17s are exempt, and you pay for no more than 7 nights in a row. The city part rises by €1 on 1 April 2027 and again on 1 April 2028.

Two sights sell timed tickets online only. Sagrada Família tickets are valid only for the time you choose, and latecomers aren't admitted. Park Güell tickets have a set entry time, with 30 minutes' grace to get in. Book both before you choose your hotel, then stay near the one you're visiting first thing in the morning. Check the basilica's official site for temporary closures before you go.

Dates When Hotels Fill Up

  • Mobile World Congress: the giant trade show at the Fira Gran Via grounds runs 1–4 March 2027. Book months ahead. The fairgrounds are on metro L9 Sud (Fira station), and Plaça d'Espanya and Sants are the nearest central bases.
  • La Mercè: the city's main festival, in late September (23–27 September in 2026), with free concerts, human towers and fire runs. The old town is lively and loud.
  • Festa Major de Gràcia: about a week in mid-August, around 15 August, when Gràcia's streets are decorated and stay noisy late into the night. Great to visit, hard to sleep through if you stay in Gràcia.
